Special estate as location for new high-quality care centre
With both quality buildings and quality of life in mind, we developed a new sustainable residential complex in less than six months. One where 96 elderly people could stay in control of their own lives and ‘live like they are at home’.

A comfortable life near the forest
Nowadays, people are living at home for longer and longer. But once they go to a care home, a lot of help is often needed. While this is true, many care centres, with, for example, small accommodation areas and narrow corridors, are not equipped to provide this level of care. TanteLouise Foundation asked us to develop a new care location in Halsteren, and they set the bar high. The starting point? Sustainable and comfortable flats, where every day feels like ‘home’ for residents.
Built fast, with the quality of a permanent structure
Our very own Lamber Brothers went straight to work and we submitted a number of configurations based on the PoR. The client ultimately opted for the three-storey building including customised facilities and finishing. For example, the care centre is fully circular, furnished, and even features the restaurant Brasserie Bosgaard on the ground floor. And while the front cladding made of steel and wooden sections gives the complex a modern look, inside it feels cosy and homely. All completed in less than six months.
“The modular building was relocated from the eastern to the western area of the Netherlands and re-commissioned. In other words: circularity at its best.’’
Joziene van de linde, Managing Director VDL De Meeuw
A pleasant living environment, both indoors and outdoors
To strengthen the relationship with the surroundings, the flats have spacious terraces and large windows. At the rear, residents overlook the green forest edge, while the front offers a view of Hoofdlaan. Because there is always something going on there. Nature is also tangible inside, thanks to the colourful ceiling-high photos on the walls and numerous plants in the communal areas. All of this contributes to a pleasant living experience, which we are committed to providing, together with TanteLouise.
From the outside, there is little difference between modular buildings and traditional structures. In fact, it is actually impossible to distinguish between the appearance of modular flexible housing and traditional real estate. More and more architects are approaching VDL De Meeuw about flexible housing developments. Flexible housing and traditional real estate have to comply with the same requirements. In other words, both comply with the Dutch Environment Buildings Decree (Bbl).
The modules that come together to form the final building are produced in a controlled environment. This ensures a safe working environment with a high level of control over quality and minimal impact on the production process due to weather. This in turn prevents delays and failure costs, and increases control over the overall project. Speed and quality go hand in hand here.
After production, the modules are transported to the site. Once on site, these modules are connected to each other, to the electricity grid, to the sewerage, and so on, and the interior is finished according to the specifications agreed upon. At that point, the building is then commissioned and modified in the future according to any changing requirements.
