Housing With our space concepts, you can create a comfortable facility that serves as a fully-fledged building.
Temporary housing at various locations, Purmerend
Commissioned by the municipality of Purmerend, we built a total of 200 temporary housing units at four different locations over a two-year period. The units were built to ease the pressure on the housing market. The municipality uses the units for residents who, for various reasons, need temporary accommodation at short notice. They have even been used to house Ukrainian refugees.
In the municipality of Purmerend, 200 flexible housing units have been built at four locations, including Karekietpark, Kanaaldijk, Etserstraat and Verzetslaan
These units feature distinctive wooden cladding, providing a warm and natural look that blends in well with the surroundings.
Flexible housing concepts
The housing units feature durable wooden cladding with a calming appearance that blends in beautifully with the surroundings where the units are located. The composition of the houses is different at each site, clearly demonstrating the flexibility of our housing concepts. At the Kanaaldijk site, we have maximised use of the available space by building three storeys on a relatively small plot of land.
Challenge
One of the biggest challenges in implementing the 200 flexible housing units in Purmerend was generating support among all the stakeholders. Since modular housing is not yet seen by everyone as equivalent to traditional structures, it was important to convince both the municipality and the residents of the quality and sustainability of this solution.
The VDL De Meeuw solution
To increase confidence in the modular construction method, VDL De Meeuw built a ‘test house’ and placed it in a central location in the municipality of Purmerend. This gave residents the opportunity to experience this kind of accommodation first hand, and the quality and comfort of the modular housing units was clearly demonstrated. This created a lot of enthusiasm and significantly increased support within the municipality.
This test home can still be admired today at VDL De Meeuw’s show site in Oirschot. Within the company, this house is known as the ‘Purmerend House’ and is often used to provide interested parties with a tangible impression of the high-quality modular houses produced by VDL De Meeuw.
“The test home shows that our modular homes offer the same quality as traditional structures, which immediately boosted enthusiasm in Purmerend.’’
Joziene, Managing Director VDL De Meeuw
From the outside, there is little difference between modular buildings and traditional structures. In fact, it is actually impossible to distinguish between the appearance of modular flexible housing and traditional real estate. More and more architects are approaching VDL De Meeuw about flexible housing developments. Flexible housing and traditional real estate have to comply with the same requirements. In other words, both comply with the Dutch Environment Buildings Decree (Bbl).
The modules that come together to form the final building are produced in a controlled environment. This ensures a safe working environment with a high level of control over quality and minimal impact on the production process due to weather. This in turn prevents delays and failure costs, and increases control over the overall project. Speed and quality go hand in hand here.
After production, the modules are transported to the site. Once on site, these modules are connected to each other, to the electricity grid, to the sewerage, and so on, and the interior is finished according to the specifications agreed upon. At that point, the building is then commissioned and modified in the future according to any changing requirements.
