60 temporary housing units for 240 Ukrainian refugees
Using our smart flexible solution, we quickly installed sixty four-bed housing units in Amsterdam Noord, providing a roof over the heads of 240 displaced people from Ukraine.
There for each other
60 flexible housing units to provide a safe home for some 240 Ukrainian refugees from March 2023.
A safe haven
Tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees have been streaming into our country since 2022, in search of a safe haven. To accommodate them, the government ordered the construction of temporary housing dispersed throughout the country. This includes our capital city. Soon afterwards, the municipality of Amsterdam designated Meteorenweg in the north of the city as the location that would provide a roof over the heads of some 240 displaced people. For three years at a minimum, but more importantly as soon as possible.
From a car park to a safe home
As of March 2023, Meteorenweg in Amsterdam Noord will serve as a safe haven for some 240 Ukrainian refugees. After a six-month process, they moved into the 60 flexible housing units, equipped with their own kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms. The houses are spread over two buildings and are stacked up to three storeys high, with a bright orange entrance as an eye-catching element – a design by our own architect Danai Dafnouli.
“I want to be able to offer a place like this to all refugees.’’
Eelco Beer, Care Coordinator HVO Querido
Ready-made and ready to move into
Given the urgency, our flexible solutions offered the perfect answer. The ready-made modules rolled out of the factory at lightning speed. We also took care of all the fittings. From the furniture to the cutlery, everything was delivered to the flats, ready to move into. The common areas also received at least just as much attention. In this way, we helped make Meteorenweg a nice place to live, meet people and receive visitors.
Working together is key
Young, old, families and individuals, Meteorenweg is home to a mixed group of Ukrainian displaced persons. As the flats can accommodate four people, this has also brought strangers together under one roof. Aid organisation HVO-Querido is offers them a helping hand. They are there every day to provide professional help and guidance so that the new residents can focus on their futures in Amsterdam or elsewhere.
From the outside, there is little difference between modular buildings and traditional structures. In fact, it is actually impossible to distinguish between the appearance of modular flexible housing and traditional real estate. More and more architects are approaching VDL De Meeuw about flexible housing developments. Flexible housing and traditional real estate have to comply with the same requirements. In other words, both comply with the Dutch Environment Buildings Decree (Bbl).
The modules that come together to form the final building are produced in a controlled environment. This ensures a safe working environment with a high level of control over quality and minimal impact on the production process due to weather. This in turn prevents delays and failure costs, and increases control over the overall project. Speed and quality go hand in hand here.
After production, the modules are transported to the site. Once on site, these modules are connected to each other, to the electricity grid, to the sewerage, and so on, and the interior is finished according to the specifications agreed upon. At that point, the building is then commissioned and modified in the future according to any changing requirements.
