Isala

An outpatient treatment centre with high standards

At the site of Isala’s original treatment centre, we completed a new, high-quality building in accordance with all the high standards. Here, we succeeded in creating a pleasant treatment and accommodation environment for both doctors and patients.

Modular additions

Isala is a top clinical hospital with several locations in Zwolle. Besides the main site where inpatient care takes place, there is also an outpatient treatment centre for less intense care. The latter site no longer met the requirements in terms of hygiene and installations. They therefore decided to partially demolish the old building in 2021 and replace it with something new. Our modular building system offered the perfect solution here.

Shorter construction times, less inconvenience

To make way for the modular outpatient treatment centre, we removed the outdated building section. We also disposed of the released materials. The new building was constructed from our permanent modules and it houses a variety of treatment and accommodation areas. That includes sleeping areas, since patients can stay here for up to two nights. Thanks to the modular method, the construction time was many times shorter and the inconvenience to the immediate surroundings was reduced. But that’s not all. Isala was also able to return to operations (more) quickly thanks to the speedy process. And that’s what it’s all about!

Smarter developments together

The project for Isala was going on during the time of Covid. Since physical meetings were not allowed back then, we coordinated almost everything digitally. It was an unusual way of working in the industry, so this required flexibility from all parties. In the end, together with Wiegerinck Architects, BAM, Equans and Van den Broek, we managed to complete the building on time. Totally in line with their wishes and requirements.

From the outside, there is little difference between modular buildings and traditional structures. In fact, it is actually impossible to distinguish between the appearance of modular flexible housing and traditional real estate. More and more architects are approaching VDL De Meeuw about flexible housing developments. Flexible housing and traditional real estate have to comply with the same requirements. In other words, both comply with the Dutch Environment Buildings Decree (Bbl).

The modules that come together to form the final building are produced in a controlled environment. This ensures a safe working environment with a high level of control over quality and minimal impact on the production process due to weather. This in turn prevents delays and failure costs, and increases control over the overall project. Speed and quality go hand in hand here.

After production, the modules are transported to the site. Once on site, these modules are connected to each other, to the electricity grid, to the sewerage, and so on, and the interior is finished according to the specifications agreed upon. At that point, the building is then commissioned and modified in the future according to any changing requirements.
